LEGO.com VIP Points vs Third-Party Sales: Which Actually Saves You More

April 20, 2026

LEGO.com runs frequent "Double VIP Points" promotions and they sound great in marketing โ€” but is the math actually better than a 20% off Target sale? We ran the numbers.

How VIP points work

LEGO.com VIP points accrue at 1 point per dollar at the base rate. 100 points convert to $5 redeemable at LEGO.com. So 1 point = $0.05 of future LEGO.com credit. Standard accrual = 5% effective discount in store credit.

During "Double VIP" weekends, you earn 2 points per dollar โ€” 10% effective discount.

During rare "Triple VIP" events, you earn 3 points per dollar โ€” 15% effective.

The straightforward comparison

For a $200 set:

  • 20% off at Target โ€” Pay $160. Save $40 cash. No future credit.
  • Double VIP at LEGO.com (full price) โ€” Pay $200. Earn 400 VIP = $20 in LEGO credit. Effective spend: $180.
  • 15% off + Double VIP at LEGO.com โ€” Pay $170. Earn 340 VIP = $17 LEGO credit. Effective spend: $153.

Target's straight 20% off wins for cash today.

LEGO.com only wins when sale + VIP combine. The "15% off + Double VIP" combo nets effectively 23.5% off. That beats Target.

Caveats that matter

  1. VIP credit is LEGO.com only. If you weren't going to buy more LEGO this year, the credit is worth zero to you. Don't "save" money you can't spend.
  2. Points expire. VIP points have a 24-month expiration from earning. If you only buy LEGO once a year, you may lose them.
  3. Free shipping threshold differs. LEGO.com has a $35 free shipping minimum; Target has free with $35 OR REDcard.

When LEGO.com is actually the better choice

  • Heavy LEGO buyers who'll definitely spend the credit on the next set
  • Exclusive sets that aren't sold elsewhere (e.g., GWP-eligible or LEGO.com-only items)
  • During rare Triple VIP weekends โ€” those genuinely outclass standard third-party sales
  • When stacking sale + double VIP

When Target/Walmart wins

  • One-time purchase, no plan to buy more
  • Need cash savings, not store credit
  • Shopping in-store with a REDcard for the additional 5%

The short version: don't trust "Double VIP" alone. Demand a sale price + Double VIP combo, or pick up your set at Target.

Prices and availability change.
