Target, Walmart, LEGO.com โ Where Should You Actually Buy?
Target, Walmart, and LEGO.com all carry overlapping LEGO catalogs but they're not interchangeable. Each has strengths and traps. Here's a store-by-store breakdown of when to use which.
Target
Best for: Mid-tier sets ($30โ150), in-store browsing, quick gift purchases.
Strengths:
- REDcard adds 5% off everything, stacks with any sale.
- Frequent 20% off toy promotions hit LEGO.
- Target Circle bonuses occasionally include LEGO.
- Best in-store stock visibility โ easy to grab last-minute.
Weaknesses:
- Limited UCS Star Wars and exclusive selection.
- Pricing on flagship sets ($300+) is rarely as deep as Walmart.
- In-store stock varies wildly by location.
Walmart
Best for: Flagship sets ($200+), large Technic, UCS Star Wars deals.
Strengths:
- Rollback pricing on big-ticket sets often beats everyone.
- Walmart+ membership adds shipping perks but no LEGO-specific discount.
- Online stock is generally accurate.
- Aggressive on Star Wars licensed pricing.
Weaknesses:
- In-store LEGO selection is hit-or-miss.
- No coupons or stackable discounts.
- Sales rotation is less predictable than Target's.
LEGO.com
Best for: Exclusive sets, VIP point accumulators, double-VIP events.
Strengths:
- Only place to find LEGO.com-exclusive sets and Gift With Purchase (GWP) bonuses.
- VIP points accrue toward future LEGO purchases.
- Free shipping at $35.
- Direct access to retiring sets before they vanish elsewhere.
Weaknesses:
- Rarely the cheapest cash price (third parties usually win on raw discount).
- Cyber Monday is competitive but not a clear winner.
- Slow shipping during peak windows.
Amazon (the wildcard)
Best for: Hard-to-find older sets, occasional flash deals.
Strengths:
- Wide selection including long-retired sets at marketplace prices.
- Prime shipping when in-stock.
Weaknesses:
- Algorithmic pricing โ a $200 set at 9 AM can be $230 by dinner.
- Counterfeit risk on third-party seller listings.
- Inconsistent box condition.
- Minimal sale visibility โ no easy way to track Amazon-specific LEGO promotions.
Note: We're currently rebuilding our Amazon LEGO coverage at BrickDeals โ pricing data will return as we finalize the integration.
